Departmental Hiring

We have once again been approved to hire someone to replace Dr. Renneke.  Expect to help us interview candidates late in winter term and early spring term.
Hopefully the process will go better this time around.  That Dr. Renneke is just too hard to replace!

Dr. Carkner and I are also planning sabbaticals for next year, so we'll hire a fifth person for a temporary position to cover our courses while we are on sabbatical.

We hope to hire a fifth faculty member on a permanent basis in the near future, because we'd like to add more classes to help prepare students for grad school, more astronomy, beef up the intro to scientific research, and get involved in gen ed.  If you have any anecdotes or information that would help us make the case to add more classes/faculty, please let us know.

Other than Dan's assertion that the Quantum 2 (Electric Boogaloo) course really helped him in his grad work, and Mitchko's statement that we needed more classes on advanced things in general, I really don't have much to offer in the way of anecdotes.

But we should be careful to remind the board that anecdotal evidence is highly unreliable, and then present them with the relevant graphs, projections, and models.

We've got numbers, yes we do! For example, Augustana is in the top ten in # of physics degrees per year among midwest liberal arts colleges. Of those ten, all but one have more physics faculty than we do -- two have at least twice as many. (The comparison is even better when we count all colleges & universities, not just liberal arts.)
