Possible aurora tonight

Some excerpts from an e-mail from Dr. Renneke concerning aurora tonight:

"Colleagues,

There is a good chance to see aurora tonight.
...
Spaceweather.com currently indicates that "A coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth today at approximately 1400 UT, and the impact may cause strong geomagnetic storms. Stay tuned for updates."

There is also something called the K-index. This is a measure of geomagnetic activity. If the index is 5 or greater it indicates storm activity with a good chance for aurora. Right now the index is at 8 !

I plan to leave my house shortly to go north of Davenport and have a look. I will be taking my camera and cell phone along just in case.

Cecilia, if you happen to go out and see them where you live, could you please send a quick note to the members of the physics club and/or put the notice on the Augie Blog? Point out that they will probably not be able to see them from campus. Thanks.

Dave"

I'll check it out and let you know!

OK, so right after I posted this, I walked out onto the deck, and the sky in the northwest was glowing green. Wow!

I went inside to get shoes and camera then went up hill to get a better view, but it was gone. Didn't see anything else after that.

Anyone else see anything?

Awww, dang I missed. I was watching House for too long I guess. But there was nothing that I could see when I walked back to my room. Awww, man, I can't believe that I missed it.

Hard to see anything from the Quad Cities. There really is something to be said for living out in the middle of nowhere. Now, if I could only get a cell signal.
