Yes, Virginia, ...

Warning: The following post has nothing to do with physics*, astronomy, engineering, Augustana, or anything else that would make it relevant to this blog. I just needed to rant.

I was reading a BBC news article about a correlation between altruism and a certain part of the brain. The main part of the article was quite interesting, food for thought, you might say.

However, the article ends with a quote from Dr George Fieldman (Why him? He didn't seem to be inviolved with the research) that left me speechless and stomping:
"Altruism is usually reciprocal - you do something for someone and you expect something back ultimately.

"The other types are kin altruism, giving to ones relatives, and being cheated or cuckolded."

So, let's see, if you are nice to someone who isn't kin without expecting anything in return, you are a big sucker?

I bet he doesn't believe in Santa Claus, either.


*except to the extent that all biology comes down to physics if you look hard enough.
