My New Little Car

I just spent most of the weekend car shopping. We traded in the minivan for a 2007 Chevy Aveo. Richard says getting rid of the van is our first step toward empty nest. But never fear, we can still take physics club field trips -- we'll just have to borrow an Augie van.

The Aveo is about as little a car as you can get. I think little cars are cute, but I also liked the pricetag and the gas mileage. Yes, I'm nothing if not cheap. It is brand new, though. This time I didn't cheap out totally and get a used car. This is my first-ever new car. Yay!

I would like to send a shout-out to Green Chevrolet in East Moline. I have a total phobia of car salespeople, but this is the second time I've bought a car from Green (two different salespeople) without any ill effects. They are awesome.

The only thing that put me off at all, was at the very end of the transaction, the salesperson informed us that we would be getting a customer satisfaction form in the mail. She asked us to be generous, because her paycheck depended on it. That made me a bit uncomfortable. It also made me wonder if teachers say that kind of thing to their students, and if it helps or if it makes the students uncomfortable. Should I be begging my students for positive evaluations?

So, if you see a white Aveo around campus with a license plate that references a quantum paradox, wave to me!

With gas prices I am thinking this was a pretty smart move! I would love to swap my gas guzzler - a Chevy Silverado. But that would also mean getting rid of the camper that I use to tow it with. Or I could get a "beater" pickup truck and use an Aveo/Prius for commuting.

Would one of you physics grads hurry up and solve the battery problem for plug-in electric cars? :)
