It's gonna be a long night!

Happy Winter Solstice! Welcome to the longest night of the year*.

According to the Weather Underground, we have 10 hours 14 minutes of visible light here today**, and tomorrow will be two seconds longer! Yeah, the days will get longer very slowly at first, but it will speed up. The days will get longer faster and faster until the Vernal (Spring) Equinox on March 19, 2010. March 19 will be approximately 3 minutes longer than March 18. Three minutes doesn't sound like much, but it is about 90 times bigger than the difference between today and tomorrow.

After March 19, the days will continue to get longer, but less and less quickly until the Summer Solstice - at that time they quit getting longer altogether and start getting shorter again, but let's not think about the days getting shorter right now!

Have a wonderful winter season!
