Minutes of the 1/31/12 Physics Club Meeting

Physics Club Meeting Minutes, Tuesday, 1.31.12 (Thanks to the Natalie-Nathan team!)

ROBOTS!
People interested in robotics should swing by the old Volvo dealership on 4th Avenue, to help build a robot-basketball robvot, like in that video we watched.
They're meeting Mondays Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays because it's crunch time!
Interested parties (Jayce, Ahmed, Peter)? should meet in room 120, at 5:45 on monday and tuesday to head over.

Professor Smart's Fun with Physics Show! is Sat, Feb. 18 at the Moline HS Auditorium.
...except that's the weekend after finals, so who really's going to go to that...?

We're having a Week 10 fundraiser!
We'll be selling Nerdy Valentines! Keep posting your most creative nerdy pickup lines and mushy love poetry to the Physics Club Facebook group page, so we can implement them for financial gain. I mean pizza.
The schedule so far for manning the table o' goods:

T 11:30-1 Ahmed
W 1130-1 Palm/Nat 1-215 Stu/Kim 230-? Peter
Th 1030-1130 Sven
F 345-445 Sven
Thank you cheap overseas labor!

Planning our Spring Open House starts now!
The date has been set as Sunday of Week 4, March 25.

Also on the horizon, Nathan needs to get in touch with some scout people to get this scout night off the ground. Seriously.

Open House and Scholarship Competition

The open house today went very well! We had a good number of people involved - five high school seniors and various parental units came to check out Augie Physics, and four Augie physics club members and I came to show them what we're all about. Thanks for helping out Jake, Alaina, Adam, and Jess (in order of appearance)!!

First we did a quick presentation about physics and pre-engineering at Augustana. The visitors had lots of good questions about our program, classes, students, and lab equipment. When a parent asked about numbers of students, I brought up the list of current majors, and noticed something interesting: we average about 10 majors graduating per year, but currently the listing shows 16 seniors and 3 sophomores - quite a variation from the mean!

After the Q&A, the club memebers showed off some of the demo equipment ("toys") we use for our outreach program, and, of course, smashed some stuff frozen in liquid nitrogen! Everyone seemed to enjoy this part of the day - no surprise there!

Finally the prospective students took a scholarship test, based on introductory physics topics. Can't say that part was the most fun, but worth it to win a scholarship. Hope they all came away with something valuable, even if they don't win the scholarship!

Physics Club Meeting Minutes

Here are the club meeting minutes from 1/15/09, courtesy of Mike H:

1. science of toys open house Feb. 8th
        -Kyle is supposed to advertise
-we are still looking for a few ideas on demos
2. the duck sale will be postponed until next term.
3. We are looking for T-shirt ideas
4. Fundraiser - Bake sale/old t-shirt sale week 10 the 10-12th
5. Saturday January 24th, 2009 :
        10:15-11:30 open house
        11:30-12:30 Test of prospective students
6. March 13-16 in pittsburgh APS
7. april is APS in Denver

And some more stuff from yours truly:

*Check your toyboxes for physics-related toys for the open house! We have a couple pull-back cars, tops, yo-yos, balls, slinkies, boomwhackers, hummers (the noisy plastic tubes, not the oversized SUV's!), bubble soap, and a few others. Does anyone have Operation? Magnetix? bobbleheads? what else???

* Contact Jess if you are interested in going to the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) meeting in Chicago February 12-16. Jess will be presenting (I think she said Friday) on our open houses.

Physics Open House and Scolarship Competition

Don't forget that on Saturday, prospective students will be on campus for Augie's Open House and Scholarship Competition.

Part of the physics and astronomy department's open house depends on current (and former?) students. Augie students can offer the high school students a perspective on what it is like to be a physics major and/or physics club member. And show off our outreach toys!! If you can help out, let me know.

The prospective students' schedule looks like this:

9:00 a.m. Check-in, continental breakfast, information fair

9:45 a.m. Welcome Address

10:15 a.m. Departmental Open House (parents & students)

11:30 a.m. Scholarship Competition (students)

11:30 a.m. Financial Assistance Seminar (optional for parents)

12:30 p.m. Lunch, Tour, Wrap-Up with Admissions, Student Activities Fair

So they are with us from 10:15 - 12:15ish. The most important time for the Augie students to be around is before the competition, but if this year is anything like last year, it won't take an hour for the competition. There will be more time for playing with toys afterward.

Astronomy Open House next weekend!

AUGUSTANA’S JOHN DEERE PLANETARIUM OPEN HOUSE

Saturday, Nov. 1st, 7:00-8:30PM

Helpers are needed

Here are the details:

John Deere Planetarium will be open to the public on Saturday, November 1, 2008 for the annual Fall Open House, from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., with indoor and outdoor programs led by planetarium director Dr. Lee Carkner. Admission is free.

The star of this year’s show will be Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system. Telescope views will show off the planet’s cloud bands and four large moons. The evening’s events will also include a planetarium show where the wonders of the night sky will be presented on the facility’s 30-foot dome with the Spitz A3P projector. Views of double stars, star clusters and galaxies will be provided via the 14-inch reflecting telescope in the Gamble Observatory. In addition, the Getz-Rogers Gallery, where images of celestial objects and a quarter-ton piece of the Canyon Diablo meteor are on display, will also be open to the public.

The Fryxell Geology Museum, which features one of the best collections of minerals and fossils in the Midwest, will also be open to the public. Available for viewing are a Tyrannosaurus rex skull, the wall of glowing, fluorescent rocks and a cast of the complete 22-foot long skeleton of Cryolophosaurus, a large crested carnivorous dinosaur discovered in Antarctica.

The observing areas are unheated so dress appropriate to the weather. In the event of cloudy sky conditions, telescope views may not be possible but the indoor programs will still be offered.

For more information contact Dr. Lee Carkner at 309/794-7327 or Gail Parsons (309)794 7318 visit the Planetarium website at http://helios.augustana.edu/astronomy.

Open House, Boat Building, and Rope Pull

The news of the day:

The open house today went well. The demos were a lot of fun and seemed to connect well with the kids (photos coming soon!). A Dispatch/Argus newspaper reporter and a channel 4 newsperson were there, so we might get some publicity.

I only wish they would do the publicity before the event instead of after. We didn't have a large turnout. Maybe the weather was too nice. Sounds like we will start getting more publicity help from the administration this year, so that should help. yay!

Also, more boat building tomorrow (Monday) starting at 2ish. Come when you can. Give a call at x3407 or 3408 before you come down, if you think we might have left already. We probably will be working on it every day this week to get it all painted and ready for the big day on Saturday!

Coming up this Thursday evening - the physics club will be competing, and we need all the help we can get. Come give us a hand!

Open House Next Sunday!

Our Olympic-themed Physics Open House is Sunday, Oct 5, 1-4 pm. Come join the fun!

Demo ideas we talked about (I'll add more if I remember more - remind me in the comments, if you think of something I missed):

Friction and Drag - Friend and Foe
Swimmers swim faster if there is low drag. Special swim suits, shaving arms and legs, etc. Demonstrate using different materials pulled through a pan/pool of water - smooth surface vs furry surface, flat surface vs streamlined surface, wide surface vs narrow surface, water vs thicker fluid?
On the other hand, swimmers use drag to propel themselves along. Demonstrate with kid on cart, they push a paddle in the water and the water pushes them the opposite way (action force and reaction force). Runners also use friction in the same way to propel themselves forward. Video of runner slipping?

Skaters reduce friction on ice, because a bit of ice melts under their skates, so they are riding on a thin film of liquid water. Even less friction if riding on a thin film of air. Demonstrate by racing solid block, drops of water, and drops of liquid nitrogen (which vaporizes, creating a thin film of air for it to ride on).

Rotation - Divers and skaters and bikers
Bicyclists turn by leaning (video). This a rotational form of action-reaction. Demonstration: If kid on a cart pushes on wall, it will push back on them. If a kid on platform (which is free to rotate) changes the rotation of a spinning wheel, it changes the kids' rotation, too.

Divers and skaters can speed up their rotation by changing their moment of inertia (bringing their mass closer to the center of rotation). Demonstrate by rotating kid on platform with masses in outstretched arms; when they bring their arms closer to the center of rotation, their rotation will speed up.

Elasticity - Bounce!
How bouncy a ball is depends on its elasticity. When it hits a surface, it stops for a moment losing all its kinetic energy. Elasticity is a measure of how much of that energy is stored in the deformation of the ball, and how much is dissipated or lost. Demonstrate by bouncing different kinds of balls (basketball, soccer, handball, table tennis, tennis, volleyball), including "happy" and "sad" balls. Also demonstrate how a spring stores energy when squished (projectile launcher?), but Playdoh dissipates it.

Projectile motion - Flying through the air
In field events, basketball, ski jumping, shooting, archery, etc, a projectile moves up and down while at the same time moving forward. You can't aim straight at your target, because the projectile will drop during its flight and arrive below the target. The up and down motion is (approximately) independent of how the object is moving sideways. Maximum range is achieved at (approximately) 45o. Demonstrate via projectile launcher and/or trebuchet.

Relative motion - Why shotputters spin and javelin throwers run
Since they are moving when they release the projectile, it moves with a velocity equal to the sum of the velocity of the projectile relative to you and your velocity relative to the ground. Demonstrate with a moving projectile launcher. We need to test this one to see if it works.

Boat Building Schedule

Update: photos
We had a fun time apple-picking and boat-building today. We rode a hay-rack, some of us climbed trees, some of us raced through a wetlands, we made several attempts at group photos (coming soon?), and we even found time to pick 76 pounds of apples. Then we came back to Augie and planned our boat design, decided on supplies we needed, and wished we had some pizza. And we decided we'd actually start building the boat tomorrow - here's the schedule so far:

Meet in Science room 120 or 107 to work on the Cardboard boat for the Homecoming Regatta:

Tomorrow (Mon 9-22) 2:30 til whenever
Wednesday (9-24) 1:00 til whenever
Thursday 11:30 -12:30 (stay later if you can)

ALSO - Don't forget to contact Alaina-Orwitz with your movie preferences for Netflix, and contact Jessica-Belle if you want to help with the Olympics Open House Oct 5.
