Oh, Atom, Where Art Thou?

Had our first physics club meeting of the year last week. I'll have the minutes up soon, but I'll give you a preview: lots of good ideas and good attendance including a couple alums. Alums are always welcome - stop by and say "hi!"

Speaking of alums, I got the following message from an alum, who knew I enjoyed good puns (and bad ones, too, for that matter):
"Atoms have mass!?!? I did not know they were catholic"
I attempted to respond with more amusing wordplay:
"Ah... since you used the small letter c, you must mean that you did not know that atoms were universal. Last I checked, no matter where you look in the universe, you can expect to find at least one atom within about a meter. Sounds universal to me"

Well, not only was my response not that funny, it was also WRONG! Can you see where I made my mistake?

My mistake was in assuming that the places where you would be furthest from an atom would be the least dense places in the universe, where the density is about one atom per cubic meter, so you might expect to be within about a meter of an atom there. In actual fact, it is the most dense places in the universe where you are farthest from an atom.

Consider the dense interior of the Sun (or any star). The matter there is so dense that the electrons are ripped from the atoms, leaving separated ions and electrons, a state of matter called a plasma. I would say that at the center of the Sun, then, you are about 700 thousand kilometers from the nearest atom.

It could be argued that interior of the Sun still contains atoms, albeit ionized atoms. Consider then a neutron star, which is hundreds of trillions of times more dense than the Sun. A neutron star is so dense that there are no longer individual atoms, and the electrons have been fused with the protons. The net result is an immense mass of neutrons. At the center of a neutron star, you are surrounded by neutrons, not atoms. At the center of the typical neutron star, you would be about 12 kilometers from the nearest atom.

Shall we go even denser? Though we have never seen inside a black hole, it is pretty certain that atoms would be obliterated as matter collapses to extreme densities upon forming a black hole. At the center of our galaxy there is a supermassive black hole. At the center of that black hole, you might be a few trillion meters from the nearest atom - that's a long way to go to find an atom, approximately the distance from here to Pluto!

Maybe atoms aren't so catholic after all.

Sweet!

Unfortunately Augustana lost the homecoming football game today, but the physics club had a great day.

Once again, our cardboard boat took first place in the mixed-gender division, thanks to rowers Adam and Jake, and tons of work done over the past month by Alaina and others (but mostly Alaina :). And it really was homecoming for our alums - so awesome to see Tom, Dan, and Vivian (and to meet Liz, and Adam's parents)!!

I'll upload photos soon. If you took photos, too, leave a link in the comments.

Physics Club Minutes from 3/27/08

Physics Club Minutes… courtesy of Kristen

*We need $100 more dollars to go to get our pyrotechnics training and have a fireworks show. We raised between 38-40 dollars at our no bake sale (Jess didn’t count the money before hand — hence the estimate)
*APOP is back in business. An email will go around for sign up soon. It's fun so if you can, do it!
*There is no interest in the Radiology field trip
*Our new tshirt will be

            I find you physically attractive

            F=GMmeMyou/R2
*We will be planning open houses soon. They will be when its warmer. One will be just ours (possibly) and the other will be in conjunction with the other sciency clubs
*On April 17th, two Augie Alums will be coming to talk about their experiences with Grad school and answer any questions we have. There will be pizza.
*Talk about a possible catapult fundraiser… throw pies at people?
*Gabe will be giving a Math talk THIS THURSDAY at 11:30 in room 120.
He would appreciate any and all support because we would be his last chance to test his speech out before he gives it at an MAA convention
It will be BYOF (bring your own food) sorry
*Sven Steen came to campaign his ticket for the new SGA exec board. He also suggests that we write up some contingencies for money because we are not a funded club.

Busy Week!

Robots, eclipse, nanotech - next week is a good week for science geeks!

This weekend, Feb 16-17: See the previous post for info about the robot at the mall. I hear that the robot's arm will be controlled by the driver's arm, mimicing its motion - that I gotta see!

Then Wednesday, Feb 20: Lunar Eclipse Open House 8-10 pm. Dr. Carkner is going to be wanting some help - let him know if you'd be willing to help with telescopes or traffic control or whatever. And you'll get the best view of this event, which I must say is quite astronomical. Oh, and if you are in charge of the weather, make sure it's clear!

Double-header Thursday, Feb 21: 11:30 am - A physics club meeting at long last. I'm in withdrawal!

Then Thursday evening, a talk by an Augie grad on nanotechnology for the Engineer's Week Banquet at the Putnam. This one costs money - banquet is $20 for students (plus $5 if you want to see Leonardo Da Vinci Exhibition before the banquet). Half price for dues-paying club members! We need to make reservations by Tuesday. Technically, a member of Sigma Xi (or ACS, or one of several other member societies) has to make reservations for themselves and their guests. Let me know if you want to be my guest (I'm a member of Sigma Xi) and I'll make reservations.

P.S. This is a good week to be a science geek, too. Neil DeGrasse Tyson was just on the Colbert Report, and Stephen became an astrophysicist as we watched! By the way, astrophysicist is my fall-back job, too. :-p

We Have a Boat!

Actually, we don't have a boat, but we have a plan.

A few students and alums and I met Sunday to work on a design for our cardboard boat for the Homecoming Regatta*. We think we've got a good design that can hold 300-400 pounds. We also named the boat ( a very important step that we would not want to forget): "Schroedinger's Boat." I guess we won't know if it is dead or alive until we race it.

What's next? Well, we need three things:

1) Cardboard. If you have any big boxes or large sheets of cardboard or poster mailing tubes, bring them to the advanced lab or physics club room.

2) Crew. Anyone want to claim fame and glory by rowing Schroedinger's Boat to victory? We could use two people for our crew.

3) Boat builders. We will start working on actually building the boat this Thursday at 11:30 (regular physics club time). Meet in Science 120. Don't wear anything you will mind getting glue all over (and we're not talking Elmer's washable school glue, either:-)

*Homecoming is October 27th. I think the cardboard boat races start about 10 am.

National Recognition - Pretty Cool

Wednesday's mail brought me the new AIP Report of Enrollment and Degrees. The American Institute of Physics periodically reports statistics on physics majors, such as the fact that one in every 280 bachelor's degree recipients in this country is a physics major. Cool, huh?

Well, no, that's not the cool part. The cool part is that Augustana was not just a statistic, but got its name in the report. At the top of page 9, they list all bachelor's-only departments graduating 10 or more physics bachelors per year. There's Augustana College (IL) at 11. There are only 35 schools on the list -- in the whole country!

P.S. The only other school from Illinois on the list is Illinois State.

Enjoyed the ISAAPT Meeting

The Illinois Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers Spring Meeting at Western Illinois University was this weekend. What did I get for my registration fee?

*Got to play with a robot (Lego Mindstorms) - taught it to drive straight, drive in circles, stop before it fell off the edge of a table, follow a track.

*Got to see friends/colleagues from around the state, and a couple former students who are now at Western. Good to see you, Tom and Brett!

*Got to listen to talks on a wide variety of topics: demos, teaching philosophy, gender bias, high tech teaching, ... Don't be surprised if I come back to class on Monday recharged with new ideas, new demos, and renewed vigor!

*Got a good excuse to put off my grading :-)

Notes relating to previous posts:

You might think this is just a cute kitty, but look closely at her mouth :-P

Also kinda funny is the first autonomous score made by my son's team's robot in Chicago. Yes, we did mean to do that.
